Kristen Stewart To Play Princess Diana In Pablo Larraín’s ‘Spencer’

Diana, Princess of Wales is one of the most discussed members of the British Royal Family in history. She was globally beloved and the subject to a wave of unprecedented public scrutiny up until her tragic death in 1997. As first reported by Deadline, Kristen Stewart is set to play the icon in the upcoming film Spencer helmed by Jackie director Pablo Larraín.
With a script penned by Steven Knight (Locke), the film will focus on a crucial few days in the life of Diana. The film’s events will cover one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor in Norfolk, England. Additionally, the plot will focus on the tough decision made by Diana to question her marriage to Prince Charles and create her own path in the world. With the marriage in decline, Diana decided to choose a route in life that would lead to her not ascending to the throne as Queen of England.
The movie will be shopped to several film studios during the upcoming virtual Cannes Market. Moreover, Pablo Larraín will produce the picture alongside Juan de Dios (The Club), Janine Jackowski (The Forest for the Trees), and Paul Webster (Pride & Prejudice). Production will reportedly begin early next year.

In a statement to Deadline, Larraín expressed his eagerness to get to work on the film with Kristen Stewart.
“Kristen is one of the great actors around today,” Larraín said. “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things. She can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.
Stewart is certainly an interesting choice to play the famous princess. Recently, the Twilight actress has starred in a bevy of new films including Underwater and the Charlie’s Angels reboot. Up next, she will star in the Happiest Season alongside Aubrey Plaza and Alison Brie.
