Robert De Niro To Star In Barry Levinson’s Mob Drama ‘Wise Guys’ For WB

One of the most influential actors of all time is teaming up with Oscar winner Barry Levinson for a new feature in the works for Warner Bros. As first reported by Deadline, film legend Robert De Niro has signed the dotted line to star in a new mob drama titled Wise Guys.
Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi penned the script with Levinson on board to direct the film. The project reteams Levinson with De Niro following their collaborations on such films as The Wizard of Lies, Wag the Dog, and Sleepers. Warner Bros will finance and distribute the feature and is eyeing a theatrical release as opposed to the studio’s streaming service HBO Max.

The project is reportedly a period drama taking place in the mid-20th century. The story follows a pair of Italian Americans, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, as they run two opposing mob families. Following a failed attempt by Genovese to assassinate Costello, Costello decides to step away from the life of crime. Per the initial report, De Niro will be portraying both Costello and Genovese in the feature.
Robert De Niro is objectively one of the greatest living actors of all time. Recently, the Oscar winner earned critical acclaim for his role in Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman. Moreover, De Niro also recently starred in the comedy The War With Grandpa. Up next, the actor will star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon on Apple TV+.
