Robert Rodriguez To Direct New ‘Spy Kids’ Movie For Netflix

Fresh off a quick trip to a galaxy far, far away, director Robert Rodriguez will next return to a franchise near and dear to his career. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has acquired the rights to a new movie set within the Spy Kids universe with Rodriguez tapped to direct.
In addition to his directorial duties, Rodriguez will also write and produce the new feature project. Netflix will produce and distribute the film in collaboration with Spyglass and Skydance. David Ellison (Mission: Impossible 8), Dana Goldberg (The Adam Project), are on Don Granger (Ghosted) are also on board to produce with Peter Oillataguerre (Scream) executive producing.

Per the initial report, Netflix and Rodriguez are keeping plot details for the film under wraps for the time being. However, the new film will reportedly feature a new family of spies and not serve as a continuation of the preceding Spy Kids movies.
The first Spy Kids follows the adventures of Carmen and Juni Cortez, two children who suddenly become involved in their parents’ espionage organization. Rodriguez wrote and directed the original. Additionally, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alan Cumming, Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, Robert Patrick, Tony Shalhoub, Alexa Vega, and Daryl Sabara form an impressive ensemble cast. Grossing nearly $150 million at the worldwide box office, the film spawned three sequels as well as a Netflix animated series.
