After an avant-garde performance and a tender directorial debut, Denzel Washington seems keen on opening another brutal can of criminal butt-whoopin’ again. According to a report from Collider, the illustrious actor is ready to make his return to action flicks with The Equalizer 3.
The report pulls details from a separate interview with Collider‘s Editor-in-Chief, Steven Weintraub. At one point in the sitdown, Washington notes that the next installment in the vigilante franchise has a completed script, though where it will take his character is still under wraps. Washington’s first turn with the property came in 2014. Skeptics tilted their heads at the thought of one of Hollywood’s finest playing Gun Fu, but the series has thus far garnered nearly $400 million worldwide. Who says you can’t teach a veteran actor how to kick a couple of teeth in?
According to the report, sources close to the project say that Washington won’t be the only star making their return. Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first and second films in the series, is being courted for the latest feature. The Equalizer marked the first collaboration between Washington and Fuqua in more than a decade; the pair had previously worked together on the director’s gritty cop drama, Training Day, which launched multiple careers and earned Washington the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Since then, Fuqua has been forging his career on a balance of thrillers and tout action movies (Shooter, Olympus Has Fallen, The Magnificient Seven). He’s also coming off quite the busy year, having directed two Infinite and The Guilty last year. Apple TV+ will release Fuqua’s next film, Emancipation, sometime this year.
The Equalizer 3 has no confirmed release date at this time.
