Nicolas Cage Joins Universal’s ‘Renfield’ As Dracula

Universal’s renewed interest in their monster movie franchises has provided fans with exciting new takes on some of cinema’s classic characters. Up next, the studio is producing a highly-anticipated Dracula flick titled Renfield. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, cinematic icon Nicolas Cage is will portray the fabled vampire in the film.
Cage joins X-Men: Days of Future Past star Nicholas Hoult, who is cast in the titular role. Announced in November 2019, Renfield is a monster movie placing the focus on Dracula’s henchman. The film’s original pitch hails from Invincible creator Robert Kirkman. Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley is penning the script with Skybound Entertainment producing and distributing. Finally, The Tomorrow War director Chris McKay is on board to helm the feature.

Dracula has been a staple in the Hollywood canon for almost 100 years. The horror films from Universal Pictures are based on the 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker and its 1927 play adaptation. Notably, Nicolas Cage joins the likes of Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney, Jr., Gary Oldman, Christopher Lee, and Luke Evans by portraying the vampire in a major motion picture.
Over the course of his 40-year career, Cage has appeared in classic films like The Rock, Face/Off, Con Air. The actor ranked number 40 in Empire magazine’s The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time list. However, his recent credits include a voice role in Croods 2 and a memorable turn in the film Pig. Up next, Cage will star as a fictionalized version of himself alongside Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
