Cynthia Erivo To Star In Francis Lawrence’s ‘Steel’
One of the most talented women in Hollywood today is Cynthia Erivo. Following head-turning roles in critically acclaimed films like the biopic Harriet and the heist film Widows, the Tony Award winner continues to line up her next slate of starring roles. As first reported by Deadline, the actress will next headline a new project in the works titled Steel.
Per the initial report, the upcoming thriller drama hails from Hunger Games helmer Francis Lawrence, who will direct. Additionally, Erivo will serve as an executive producer for the project alongside Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies). Moreover, Atomica scribes Adam Gyngell and Fred Fernandez Armesto will handle the script. Finally, MRC Television is handling the project’s production and distribution.
Steel will reportedly follow a self-made woman’s rise to power. Set in 1970s London, the story centers on Madeline Crowe, portrayed by Erivo, a fierce and ambitious arms dealer. After seizing control of a profession dangerously dominated by men, this young daughter of Nigerian immigrants has a drive and desire to win at all costs. However, the story is actually based on the life of Fred Fernandez Armesto’s grandmother, who was a secret agent selling arms for the British government.
Cynthia Erivo is the recipient of several accolades. Her honors include an Emmy Award, a Tony Award, and a Grammy Award, and she has been nominated for two Academy Awards. Most recently, the multihyphenate portrays the iconic Aretha Franklin in the National Geographic series Genius. Additionally, the singer plans to release new music this summer as well.
