Cynthia Erivo & Joseph Gordon-Levitt Join Tom Hanks In Disney’s ‘Pinocchio’ Remake

Disney’s live-action films based on popular animated properties continue to create new and exciting variations of classic tales. Following the success of Mulan and The Lion King, Disney will next put an animated Pinocchio remake into production. As first reported by The Wrap, Cynthia Erivo and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are the latest stars to join the film’s stellar ensemble.

The two talented actors will join film icon Tom Hanks, who will portray Geppetto. Additionally, Keegan-Michael Key will provide the voice of Honest John while Luke Evans is playing The Coachman. The cast also features Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Flora & Ulysses) voicing the title character of Pinocchio with Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) as Sofia the Seagull. Cynthia Erivo will portray the Blue Fairy in the film while Joseph Gordon-Levitt will voice the legendary Jiminy Crickett.

The film hails from longtime Disney collaborator Robert Zemeckis. The acclaimed filmmaker will direct the feature with a script penned alongside Chris Weitz (Twilight: New Moon). The remake is based on Disney’s 1940 animated classic. The second animated feature film produced by Disney follows an old Italian woodcarver named Geppetto who carves a wooden puppet named Pinocchio. If the puppet proves himself to be brave, truthful, and unselfish, he can become a real boy. The remake will go into production next month and premiere on the Disney+ streaming service in 2022.

Cynthia Erivo is the recipient of several accolades. Her honors include an Emmy Award, a Tony Award, and a Grammy Award, and she has been nominated for two Academy Awards. Up next, the multihyphenate will portray the iconic Aretha Franklin in the National Geographic series Genius. Additionally, the singer plans to release new music this summer as well. Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt recently appeared on Netflix in the films Project Power and The Trial of the Chicago 7. The Dark Knight Rises star also appears in the Netflix docuseries Amend.
