Update: According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Tiffany Haddish and Lakeith Stanfield have entered negotiations to star in the upcoming Haunted Mansion film. Additionally, Dear White People director Justin Simien is now on board to helm the feature.
Debuting more than 51 years ago at Disneyland, The Haunted Mansion ride is an instantly recognizable attraction. The success of the film led to a bevy of multimedia adaptations from comic books to video games. Last summer, it was revealed that Disney was looking to develop a new film based on the attraction with Parks & Recreaction scribe Katie Dippold handling the script. Now, a new report from The Illuminerdi reveals Disney is interested in Tiffany Haddish and Lakeith Stanfield for the main roles in the feature.
Additionally, the initial report comes with the latest story and character details for the updated Haunted Mansion feature. Reportedly, the new film will follow Gabbie, a single mother, and her young son. After purchasing a New Orleans estate at an auction, the family discovers the home is full of ghosts. Gabbie decides to hire a mysterious widower, who moonlights as a ghost guide tour, psychic, priest, and historian, to exorcise the spirit from her home.
In 2003, Disney released The Haunted Mansion. The supernatural horror-comedy is directed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) and written by David Berenbaum. The film stars the incomparable Eddie Murphy as workaholic real estate agent Jim Evers. After his wife accuses him of neglecting his children, he takes the family on a vacation. However, when the family arrives at the home that Jim is trying to sell, they soon discover a haunted mansion with inhabitants looking to break a curse. However, the film grossed just $182.3 million worldwide and received less-than-desirable reviews from critics.
Following breakout roles in comedies like Girl’s Trip and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Tiffany Haddish’s stock continues to rise. Recently, Haddish recently appeared alongside Billy Crystal in the dark comedy Here Today. Additionally, Haddish will star alongside Nicholas Cage and Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Meanwhile, the incomparable Lakeith Stanfield recently earned an Oscar nod for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah. Outside of that, the Atlanta star continues to prove his range thanks to memorable roles in Knives Out, The Photograph, and Uncut Gems. Up next, Stanfield joins Jonathan Majors and Idris Elba in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall.
