Taika Waititi is one of the most prolific and sought-after filmmakers in Hollywood today. Thanks to the success of the universally beloved MCU film Thor: Ragnarok, the director continues to build to his already stacked filmography. As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, Waititi is re-teaming with his What We Do in the Shadows partner Jemaine Clement for a new action-adventure comedy series.
Within the initial report, Clement reveals his excitement to work on the project with his longtime collaborator.
“Taika and I are working on a new series right now which we just started writing,” Clement says. “I can’t tell you much about it yet, but what’s fun about it and what makes it exciting for me is it’s something I always wanted to do which is long-form episodes in a sitcom. It’s an action-adventure comedy. It’ll be different from what I’ve usually done. I’ve made three sitcoms now, and I hope this one is still funny but more of an adventure series.”
The filmmaking duo teamed up for the 2014 New Zealand mockumentary, What We Do In The Shadows, which would go on to spawn a franchise that includes a number of short films, two spin-off television series, and one digital series. However, it appears the new series will be a far cry from what fans have come to expect from the team.
The new series adds to Waititi’s already heavy load of upcoming projects. The director recently wrapped filming on Thor: Love and Thunder and will next write and direct an installment in the Star Wars franchise. Additionally, the Oscar winner is developing a new series, titled Our Flag Means Death, for HBO Max. Meanwhile, Jemaine Clement’s career includes memorable roles in films like Moana, The Lego Batman Movie, and Dinner for Schmucks. Up next, Clement will appear as Dr. Ian Garvin in James Cameron’s Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.
