A few weeks back, Disney released its newest live-action adaptation of an animated classic with Cruella. Thankfully, these live-action films, including The Lion King and Mulan, have proven to be extremely profitable ventures. As first reported by Deadline, the studio has tapped West Side Story star Rachel Zegler as the star of its upcoming Snow White live-action adaptation.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb will helm the feature. Moreover, Dear Evan Hansen producer Marc Platt is on board to produce the feature with production beginning early 2022. In a statement, Webb touts the decision to cast Zegler in the role.
“Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” Webb said.
Originally premiering in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the first Disney animated feature film. The famous story follows the titular princess living with her stepmother, a vain Queen. Jealous of Snow White’s beauty, the wicked Queen orders the murder of her innocent stepdaughter. However, discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly dwarves.
Rachel Zegler is a star on the rise. She will next play Maria in the upcoming film West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg. Additionally, she will play a key role in the upcoming DC film Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Meanwhile, outside of these two upcoming roles, Zegler’s video of herself singing “Shallow”, from A Star is Born, has garnered over 11 million views on Twitter.
