Back in 2019, a new, more light-hearted addition to the DCEU was released. Starring Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, Shazam! tells the story of a young boy earning the power of the gods by uttering the titular phrase. The film earned $366 million at the box office and Warner Bros quickly gave a sequel the green light. Now, as first reported by The Wrap, the film’s cast is beginning to come together with West Side Story star Rachel Zegler joining the ensemble.
Per the initial report, Zegler will play a key role in the superhero flick. However, details on her character are being kept under wraps for now. Zegler joins a bevy of young, talented stars in the sequel’s cast. Along with the aforementioned Asher Angel, the cast includes Jack Dylan Grazer, Faithe Herman, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, and Jovan Armand as Billy Batson’s foster siblings. Additionally, Meagan Good, Michelle Borth, Ross Butler, D. J. Cotrona, and Adam Brody play older, superpowered versions of the ragtag team of siblings.
David F. Sandberg is returning to direct the sequel with a screenplay penned by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. Moreover, Geoff Johns will produce the feature alongside Peter Safran (Aquaman). A new rumor also suggests Henry Cavill will appear in the film as Superman.
The casting makes Zegler the second Colombian American to be cast in a DC superhero project in recent week.s She joins Sasha Calle, who will join the cast of The Flash in the role of Supergirl. Rachel Zegler is a star on the rise. She will next play Maria in the upcoming film West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg. Outside of these two upcoming roles, Zegler’s video of herself singing “Shallow”, from A Star is Born, has garnered over 11 million views on Twitter.
