Ben Mendelsohn Joins Daisy Ridley In Neil Burger’s ‘The Marsh King’s Daughter’

Ben Mendelsohn has quietly built quite the impressive résumé for himself with roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars franchise in recent years. Up next, as first reported by Deadline, the actor will star alongside fellow Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley in a new feature produced by Black Bear, Anonymous Content, and STX.
The film, titled The Marsh King’s Daughter, is based on author Karen Dionne’s novel with the same name. Divergent director Neil Burger is on board to helm the movie with an adapted screenplay by The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith (Estranged). Black Bear Pictures, Anonymous Content, and STXFilms will collaborate to produce and distribute the feature. Moreover, Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game), Keith Redmon (The Midnight Sky), and the aforementioned Mark L. Smith are on board to produce as well.

The film will follow Helena, portrayed by Daisy Ridley. On the outside, it appears Helena lives an ordinary life. However, the young woman hides a dark secret. Her father is the notorious Marsh King, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn, infamous for keeping Helena and her mother captive in a forest for years. Unable to escape her past, Helena is forced to face her demons when her father escapes from prison.
Mendelsohn’s career has seen him star in hit films like The Dark Knight Rises, Ready Player One, and Animal Kingdom. Up next, the Australian actor will reprise his Marvel role as Talos the Skrull in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion alongside Samuel L. Jackson. Additionally, he will join Peter Dinklage and Brian Tyree Henry in MGM’s upcoming film adaptation of the wildly beloved musical Cyrano.
