Helen Mirren To Portray Israel’s Only Female Prime Minister Golda Meir In Upcoming Biopic

Helen Mirren is one of the most celebrated and successful actors in cinematic history. The Oscar, Tony, and BAFTA Award winner is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. As first reported by Deadline, Mirren will star in a new film focusing on the life of Israel’s only female Prime Minister.

The biopic, titled Golda, follows the life of Golda Meir. Produced by fellow BAFTA-winner Michael Kuhn (Last Days On Mars), Golda will be directed by Oscar-winner Guy Nattiv (The Flood). The screenplay hails from Nicholas Martin (Florence Foster Jenkins), who is also on board as executive producer.

The drama charts the intense, and often high-stakes career of Meir, commonly referred to as the “Iron Lady of Israel.” Her biggest decision came during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, which erupted following an attack on the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights by Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Mirren will portray Meir, the world’s fourth and Israel’s first female Prime Minister. Production on the film is reportedly slated for October 2021. In a statement, director Guy Nattic discusses the importance of this project for him, personally.

Mirren won an Academy Award and a BAFTA Film Award for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. Additionally, the living legend touts recent appearances in recent films like RED, Hobbs & Shaw, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Up next, Helen Mirren will appear in the highly anticipated 9th Fast & Furious movie as well as play a villainous role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
