‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Star Stephanie Beatriz In Talks To Lead Voice Cast For Disney’s ‘Encanto’

This past holiday weekend, Disney+ subscribers were treated to the joy and splendor that is Pixar’s Soul. Starring Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey, the film will undoubtedly top a number of critics and fans’ end-of-the-year lists. Up next, as confirmed during Disney Investor Day, Walt Disney Animation Studios will produce a new feature titled Encanto. As first revealed by The Illuminerdi, Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz is in talks to lead the voice cast for the highly anticipated feature-length film.

Encanto will reportedly follow a 15-year-old Colombian girl named Mariana. Character descriptions published by The DisInsider reveal that the character is a “lovable, funny, fallible, utterly human protagonist.” Moreover, Mariana apparently uses humor as a mask to cover up her own self-worth struggles. If the casting comes to fruition, Beatriz will portray Mariana, who also serves as the film’s narrator.

Encanto will be the 60th film from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It will be co-directed by Byron Howard (Tangled), Jared Bush (Zootopia), and Charise Castro Smith (The Good Wife). The film’s script hails from a collaboration between Bush and Castro Smith with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda writing new original songs for the film.

Best known for playing Detective Rosa Diaz in the NBC comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Stephanie Beatriz fits the bill to portray Disney’s first Colombian character. The daughter of a Colombian father and a Bolivian mother, Beatriz was born in Neuquén, Argentina. Additionally, the actress is no stranger to lending her voice talents to animated projects either. Recently, Beatriz’s voice appeared in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Disney’s Elena of Avalor, and Apple TV’s Central Park. Up next, the versatile performer will appear on the big screen in Jon M. Chu‘s musical drama In the Heights, also created by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
