The highly anticipated film adaptation of the universally beloved musical Dear Evan Hansen continues to ramp up as it heads towards production. As first reported by Deadline, Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams has signed on to join the ensemble, joining Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, and Amandla Stenberg.
Amy Adams will reportedly play Cynthia Murphy in the film, a role originated on Broadway by Jennifer Laura Thompson. Cynthia is the mother of Connor, who will be played by Little Voice star Colton Ryan. Connor is the catalyst of the musical as his suicide puts in motion the entire plot. Amy Adams has some experience in musical roles previously appearing in Disney’s Enchanted and Moonlight Serenade. Additionally, Adams played the role of the Baker’s Wife in The Delacorte Theater’s 2012 rendition of Into the Woods.
Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a young man with a social anxiety disorder. In order to make a connection with his peers, he fabricates a relationship with a deceased student to become closer to the boy’s family. When the classmate commits suicide, shy Evan Hansen finds himself at the center of the tragedy and turmoil. In an attempt to comfort the boy’s grieving family, Evan pretends that he was actually good friends with their son. He invents a fabricated email account to prove their friendship, and when a fake suicide note makes its way online, Evan finds himself the unintended face of a viral video about loneliness and friendship.
The musical was penned by The Greatest Showman lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul alongside Steven Levenson. The three creators will serve as executive producers with Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. Levenson will write the film’s script while Wonder director Stephen Chbosky will helm the project.
Amy Adams’ accolades include two Golden Globes and nominations for six Academy Awards. Her diverse filmography includes groundbreaking roles in films like Man of Steel, American Hustle, and Vice. She will appear as Lois Lane in HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.
