Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In ‘A Suspense Novelist’s Trail Of Deceptions’ Series Adaptation

By far one of the most dependable performers in Hollywood today, Jake Gyllenhaal continues to expand his résumé. Following a universally beloved turn as the villainous Mysterio in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the BAFTA Award winner sets his sights on his next project. As first reported by Deadline, Gyllenhaal will star in a forthcoming series adaptation of a 2019 New Yorker article titled A Suspense Novelist’s Trail of Deceptions from Annapurna Pictures.
Published in the magazine in February of last year, it documents the story of Dan Mallory. The controversial figure penned the famous novel The Woman in the Window under the pseudonym A.J. Finn. The New York Times Bestseller broke a number of records and its upcoming film adaptation will star Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Anthony Mackie. However, A Suspense Novelist’s Trail of Deceptions reportedly follows an unreliable narrator who tends to brain tumors he does not have while mourning family members who are still alive. Gyllenhaal will star in the series as a man who preys on the sympathy of others to get away with whatever he likes.

The upcoming adaptation will be written and directed by Janicza Bravo. The filmmaker touts a bevy of critically acclaimed projects including 2013’s Gregory Go Boom starring Michael Cera. She has also sat in the director’s chair for an episode of Donald Glover‘s Atlanta as well as the Netflix series Dear White People. Her latest film Zola from A24 holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes following its Sundance premiere in January. Bravo details her excitement for the project in an accompanying statement.
“Our protagonist is white, male, and pathological. There is a void in him and he fills it by duping people. He’s a scammer,” said Bravo. “The series examines white identity and how we as an audience participate in making room for this behavior. Getting to partner with Annapurna and Nine Stories is a gift and I am most thrilled for what lies ahead.”
Additionally, Gyllenhaal will next appear on-stage at London’s Savoy Theatre in Sunday in the Park with George. He will also star in the upcoming HBO series titled Lake Success and Netflix’s The Division alongside Jessica Chastain.
