Sam Rockwell In Talks To Star In Merle Haggard Biopic

Fresh off memorable turns in Richard Jewell and Trolls World Tour, Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell is reportedly circling his next starring role. According to Deadline, Rockwell is in talks to star as one of the greatest voices in country music history Merle Haggard in an upcoming biopic.
The film will be financed and distributed by Amazon Studios. The film helms from Seabiscuit director Robin Bissell who will also pen the script alongside Haggard’s widow Teresa Haggard. Moreover, the screenplay will feature stories adapted from the singer’s 1981 memoir Sing Me Back Home.

Rockwell will also provide his own vocals for the upcoming biopic. If an agreement is made, the actor will record covers of Haggard’s most famous songs. Merle Haggard was an American country guitarist and singer. Between the 1960s and 1980s, he had 38 #1 hits on the US country singles chart. The legendary “Okie from Muskogee” singer earned a Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the industry.
Additionally, the upcoming biopic sees Rockwell reteaming with director Robin Bissell following 2019’s The Best of Enemies. Up next for Rockwell, who currently appears on FX’s Fosse/Verdon, is a starring role in The One and Only Ivan. In 2017, the JoJo Rabbit star won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
