Back in the summer of 2020, legendary filmmaker, Martin Scorsese inked a first-look TV and movie deal with Apple Studios. The fruits of that deal will begin to come to life later this year with the highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon. Next, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the director will develop a film adaptation of the upcoming non-fiction book, The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder.
Notably, the project will re-team Scorsese with his longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio, who is attached to star in the film as well as serve as an executive producer. Apple Original Films secured the rights to the book, which hails from author David Grann and will publish in April 2023.
Set in the 1740s, The Wager tells the complicated and fascinating story of the fallout of a mysterious ship crash landing on an island off the coast of Brazil. The 30 men on the ship claim to be the surviving crew of a British ship chasing a Spanish ship and were greeted as heroes by the island natives. However, six months later, another ship arrives claiming the men are actually mutineers. The tale spins out of control with charges and countercharges of murder and mutiny ending in a special trial to expose the truth.
Leonardo DiCaprio is world-famous for his roles in classic films like Titanic and Django Unchained. Additionally, thanks to his iconic work in The Revenant, Leonardo DiCaprio finally picked up the Oscar for Best Actor a few years ago. Up next, he will star in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Additionally, the legendary actor will star as the demented cult leader Jim Jones in an upcoming film from MGM.
