James Gunn Eyeing Second Season Of ‘Peacemaker’ On HBO Max

2022 kicked off with a bang with the debut of HBO Max’s original DCEU series, Peacemaker. Created by James Gunn and starring 16-time WWE Champion John Cena, the series has received overwhelming praise since its debut in early January. Now, speaking with Deadline, Gunn has revealed his optimism on the chance of Peacemaker receiving a second season.
“There’s a really good chance of that. We’re the biggest show in the world right now. The show is doing extraordinarily well, and we’re excited, we all like doing it, we just need to cross some Ts and dot some Is, which is basically me,” Gunn told the outlet from the set of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Additionally, the filmmaker reveals his conversations with HBO Max about more The Suicide Squad spinoff projects on HBO Max. “I can’t say anything,” Gun says. “It is connected to this universe. And I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker. It won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker. But it will be in the same universe.”

The spinoff series is reportedly 69.5 times more in demand than other original streaming series. The series is currently beating out hit shows like Netflix’s The Witcher and Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett in popularity on a weekly basis. Fans on social media, as well as media outlets, adore the series as well. In fact, Full Circle’s own Ernesto Valenzuela gushes over the show in his review for episode five, which premiered this week. He says “Peacemaker brilliantly balances different subplots, and it’s more evident than ever in this episode. ”
Starring John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick, Peacemaker is a direct followup to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The series follows Cena’s Christopher Smith/Peacemaker as he joins “Project Butterfly”, a black ops squad that targets extra-terrestrial parasitic butterfly-like creatures. The series is running eight episodes on HBO Max, with Gunn penning the scripts for all of them while directing five.
