This week, John Cena is turning heads as the titular antihero in the latest DC HBO Max series Peacemaker. With his star ever on the rise, Cena’s upcoming slate of films includes an action-comedy titled Freelance. Now, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cena will be joined by Community star Alison Brie, who will serve as the film’s leading lady.
Taken director Pierre Morel is helming the feature written by Jacob Lentz (Jimmy Kimmel Live!), in his feature writing debut. Moreover, Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is handling sales for the project at the upcoming virtual American Film Market. Steve Richards (The Book of Eli), Renee Tab (Maps to the Stars), and Christopher Tuffin (Overdrive) are on board to serve as executive producers as well.
Freelance follows a special forces operator who decides to retire from the Army and start a family. However, several years of mortgage payments, school drop-offs, and backyard barbecues have him longing for a return to action. He takes a gig as security detail for a journalist (Brie) as she interviews a cruel dictator. When a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, Cena’s character is forced to use his experience to stay alive.
Alison Brie is coming off a wildly successful run on the Emmy nominated Netflix series GLOW. Additionally, the actress recently had memorable appearances in Promising Young Woman and Happiest Season as well. The multitalented actress also frequently writes, produces, and directs projects like Horse Girl, Marvel’s 616, and The Rental as well. Up next, Alison Brie joins Kiersey Clemons in Dave Franco’s Somebody I Used To Know.
