Sony Delays ‘Morbius’ To April 2022

In the face of a rapidly surging omicron variant, the season of movie release days seems like it will continue. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures will now delay the release of their Jared Leto-led Marvel film, Morbius, by three months.
The delay is slight, shifting from January 28 to April 1, 2022. However, this is still the film’s second move. Initially, Morbius looked to release in Summer 2020. However, the height of the pandemic made sure that didn’t happen. Additionally, according to a Deadline report, the new wave of the virus is only half the story, as the word on the grapevine suggests that the lastest move for Morbius is due in large part to the blockbusting success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

As the wall crawler’s latest entry continues to carve out a billion-dollar presence at the global box office, Deadline‘s report speculates that Sony may have stalled their Dr. Michael Morbius introduction to avoid infighting between two of their own properties.
As it stands now, Morbius will open alongside a handful of adult-skewing, mid-budget films before facing tough competition one week later. Illumination’s rumored Donkey Kong adaptation starring Seth Rogen is still slated for an April 7 release, while the Brad Pitt-driven Bullet Train, another Sony property, will come out one day later.
Morbius will hit theatres on April 1, 2022.
What do you think of Sony’s latest delay? Could this be the first of more to come?
