Yet another star has seemingly joined the cast of Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Hugh Grant is set to appear as an Oompa Loompa in the film.
The original film will explore the early days of the eccentric candy maker, Willy Wonka, and depict the character like never before. Chalamet joins Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in portraying the iconic character. Wilder was the first to star in the role in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, while Depp portrayed the character in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Additionally, previous rumors had Warner Bros. eyeing Tom Holland, Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover, and Ezra Miller for the role, but the focus has apparently shifted to either Holland or Chalamet.
Grant joins an already stacked cast alongside the lead Chalamet, Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Sally Hawkins in unknown roles. Additionally, the cast will be rounded out by Tom Davis (Coneheads), Simon Farnaby (Ghosts), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
Paul King (Paddington) is on board to direct the film. Moreover, King co-wrote the script with Simon Rich (An American Pickle) based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. David Heyman (Harry Potter) will serve as the film’s executive producer alongside Luke Kelly and Michael Siegel. Additionally, the prequel is set to feature several musical numbers.
Grant is best known for his roles in films such as Notting Hill, Bridget Jone’s Diary, and Love Actually. Recently he starred alongside Matthew McConaughey and Charlie Hunnam in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen.
