‘Gotham’ Star Victoria Cartagena Joins ‘Batwoman’ Season 3 As Renee Montoya

With season two under its belt and season three on its way, The CW’s Batwoman is one of the most celebrated offerings from the Arrowverse. With notable names from Batman’s rogue gallery like Poison Ivy and Black Mask already making their presence felt, another iconic character from the comics will look to make their mark as well. According to Deadline, Victoria Cartagena will join the cast of Batwoman as DC hero Renee Montoya.

Previously, Victoria Cartagena portrayed Renee Montoya on Fox’s DC series Gotham. However, she will play a different version of the character on Batwoman. Per the initial report, Cartagena’s Montoya is a former GCPD officer who left the force after dealing with years of corruption. Her character is also described as righteous, pragmatic, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian for Batman: The Animated Series, Renee Montoya first debuted in the pages of DC Comics in 1992. The daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Montoya has partnered with Harvey Bullock before being promoted to detective. The character made her cinematic debut in the DCEU film Birds of Prey, portrayed by Oscar nominee Rosie Perez.

Montoya made her live-action debut when Victoria Cartagena played her in the first season of Gotham. However, Cartagena is also known for her roles in TV shows like Jessica Jones, You, and Manifest. Cartagena also touts a role alongside the late Chadwick Boseman in 21 Bridges. Most recently, the actress appeared in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series Servant.
