Renée Elise Goldsberry To Star In Billy Porter’s Directorial Debut ‘What If?’

After several decades in the business, it appears Renée Elise Goldsberry’s stock continues to rise following the overwhelming success of Hamilton. With a bevy of TV and stage roles under her belt, Goldsberry will next lead the ensemble cast for a new film titled What If?, Deadline reports.
What If? will mark the exciting feature directorial debut for Tony and Emmy Award winner Billy Porter. Additionally, Goldsberry will join Eva Reign (Sideways Smile) and Abubakr Ali (Katy Keene) in the film’s lead roles. Moreover, Courtnee Carter (The Black Experience), Kelly Lamor Wilson (Freaky), and Carnegie Mellon alum Grant Reynolds round out the film’s cast as well.

Written by Alvaro García Lecuona, What If? follows a Trans high school senior named Kelsa, played by Eva Reign. Described as a modern coming-out story, the plot also charts KHAL, portrayed by Abubakr Ali, posts about his crush online and the internet implores him to go for it. What follows is an unexpected high school love story filled with twists and turns. Orion Pictures will produce and distribute What If? with production beginning this week.
utside of her role in Hamilton, Goldsberry touts an impressive résumé. She has appeared on-stage in the original Broadway cast of The Color Purple, The Lion King, and Rent. Most recently, Goldsberry starred alongside Sterling K. Brown in Waves. Additionally, she leads the cast of the hit Peacock comedy series girls5eva with Sara Bareilles. Up next, Goldsberry will appear as a character named Amelia in Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk.
