DJ Screw Biopic In Development At Sony Pictures

Recently, musical biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman have received praise from both critics and fans alike. In response, major film studios have given the green light to new musical biopics about singers like Michael Jackson, and Sammy Davis Jr. However, hip hop stars are no stranger to the biopic genre in their own right. Previous offerings include big-screen depictions of the lives of N.W.A., The Notorious B.I.G., and Tupac. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is developing a new picture focusing on the life of Houston hip hop legend, DC Screw.
DJ Screw, real name Robert Earl Davis Jr., is best known as the creator of the chopped and screwed DJ technique. He was a central and influential figure in the Houston hip hop community and was the leader of Houston’s Screwed Up Click. Overall, DJ Screw released over 350 mixtapes and was recognized as an innovator in the hip hop community. However, DJ Screw, unfortunately, passed away at the age of 29 in 2000.

Moreover, Isaac Yowman (Travis Scott: Look Mom I Can Fly) will oversee the film’s development and serve as an executive producer alongside Sony VP Maia Eyre.
In a statement, Yowman expresses his excitement to tell DJ Screw’s story with Sony Pictures.
“Jeron and Maia have been extremely helpful and transparent in navigating me through this process,” offered Yowman. “They’ve committed to making sure my voice as a black filmmaker is heard. The team we’re building is super solid. I can tell Sony genuinely wants to see me grow as a creative, and that means a lot. The family is happy and so am I.”
