Gugu Mbatha-Raw To Star In Reese Witherspoon’s Apple TV+ Series ‘Surface’

After just a year into operation, Apple TV+ continues to churn out award-winning content and find its footing in the ongoing streaming wars. With year one successes like Central Park and Greyhound, it appears the streamer is showing no signs of slowing down. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, a few names familiar with each other, thanks to their work on Apple’s The Morning Show, are set to reunite for a new series titled Surface.
Per the initial report, Gugu Mbatha-Raw will topline the show’s cast. Moreover, Reese Witherspoon boards the series as an executive producer via her Hello Sunshine banner. Additionally, High Fidelity creator Veronica West will produce and write the series as well.

At this time, details on the series remain scarce. Stemming from an original idea from the aforementioned West, Surface will reportedly be a psychological thriller and run for eight episodes. Lauren Neustadter (Big Little Lies) will serve as an executive producer with production slated to begin early next year.
The new project continues Mbatha-Raw’s impressive streak of starring roles. In addition to the dramatic turn in The Morning Show, the actress will appear alongside Tom Hiddleston in Marvel’s Loki for Disney+. Additionally, her résumé already touts roles in blockbusters like Beauty and the Beast (2017), The Cloverfield Paradox, and A Wrinkle in Time. Up next, the versatile performer will reprise her role as Hannah Shoenfeld in season two of The Morning Show.
