Joaquin Phoenix Reportedly In Talks To Star In Ari Aster’s ‘Beau Is Afraid’

Following a huge victory for Best Actor at this year’s 92nd Academy Awards and the birth of his first child, Joaquin Pheonix is riding a wave of momentum into his next big role. As first reported by DiscussingFilm, the acclaimed thespian is in negotiations to star in director Ari Aster’s latest mind-bending horror movie.
Per the initial report, the feature, titled Beau Is Afraid, will seemingly follow Aster’s latest string of absolutely wild horror films. Following the release of Hereditary and Midsommer, big hits with both fans and critics alike, Aster’s latest endeavor will continue that trend. The film will follow Pheonix’s character Beau, an extremely anxious but well-mannered man. Beau has a tumultuous relationship with his autocratic mother due to the pain of having an absent father. After he travels home upon hearing of his mother’s mysterious death, Beau makes stunning discoveries about their past. Moreover, the journey to discovery is met with a bevy of supernatural threats.

Aster will reportedly write, direct, and produce the film via his production banner Square Peg.
One of the greatest actors in cinematic history, Joaquin Pheonix usually commits fully to his characters. Most recently, the actor delivered a jaw-dropping performance as the Clown Prince of Crime in DC’s Joker. His impressive litany of roles also includes critically acclaimed turns in films like Walk The Line, Her, and Hotel Rwanda. Up next, Pheonix will appear in A24’s Mike Mills-directed drama C’mon C’mon and Ridley Scott’s Kitbag.
