‘Black Panther 2’ To Begin Filming July 2021 With Tenoch Huerta Joining The Cast In Villainous Role

The world came to a standstill that fateful August night. News that inspiring real-life hero Chadwick Boseman quietly lost his fight with colon cancer and passed at the age of 43 hit the internet. After months of grieving a loss that fans will never quite move on from, it appears Marvel is beginning to make plans for the planned sequel to Boseman’s Oscar-nominated film Black Panther. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther 2 will begin shooting in July 2021.
Moreover, the report notes that Narcos: Mexico star Tenoch Huerta is joining the film’s cast as one of the antagonists. At the time of this writing, it is not clear who Huerta will portray but there is no shortage of Marvel villains often at odds with the King of Wakanda within the pages of Marvel Comics.
Ryan Coogler will return to write and direct the sequel. Moreover, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett are all on-board to reprise their roles in the film. Previously, Martin Freeman claimed he would return for a sequel as well. Sources say Wright’s character Shuri will take on a more prominent role in the film. Last week, Marvel’s head of production Victoria Alonso stated that a digital double of Boseman would not be created for the film.

The news is likely to receive mixed emotions from Marvel fans. Of course, Boseman perfectly embodied the role of T’Challa and is as close to irreplaceable as an actor can be. However, Marvel will need to take a big step forward to continue its cinematic universe after not releasing a film for the entirety of 2020. Black Panther 2 serving as a tribute to the legendary Boseman and propulsion point for the franchise future will assuredly be the studio’s goal.
Releasing in 2018, Black Panther follows King T’Challa’s ascension to the throne of Wakanda. The film became a cultural phenomenon and went on to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. With seven Oscar nominations, it is the first superhero film to receive a Best Picture nomination and the first MCU film to win an Academy Award.
Black Panther 2 will release on May 6, 2022.
