Madonna To Write & Direct Her Own Biopic In The Works At Universal Pictures

The last few years have been filled with motion pictures about the lives and times of wildly popular musical acts. Films like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman have received praise from both critics and fans alike. In response, major film studios have given the green light to new musical biopics about singers like Micahel Jackson and Whitney Houston. As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, the “Queen of Pop” Madonna will be the next artist to get the big-budget biopic treatment.
Universal Pictures is developing the biopic as the “untold story of Madonna.” However, Madonna herself will join the upcoming feature as its director, executive producer, and co-writer. She will pen the script alongside Juno writer Diablo Cody. Per the initial report, the film will follow the singer’s rise to prominence as she becomes a game-changing musician, actress, author, and entrepreneur. Moreover, Little Women and Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal will join the film to produce alongside Sara Zambreno (W.E.) and Madonna’s longtime manager, Guy Oseary.

Madonna expressed her excitement to tell her own story on the big screen in a statement accompanying the announcement.
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
The singer is widely regarded as one of the most impactful figures in pop culture. With 300 million records sold worldwide, Madonna is the best-selling female music artist of all time according to Guinness World Records. Moreover, she is the most successful solo artist in the history of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and stands among fellow giants of the industry in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. However, the upcoming biopic will not be Madonna’s first foray into cinema. She has starred in a bevy of films including Die Another Day and Evita. Additionally, the multitalented performer directed the 2008 British comedy-drama Filth & Wisdom starring Richard E. Grant.
