Colin Kaepernick Teams With Ava DuVernay For Biographical Netflix Series

Colin Kaepernick is one of the most polarizing figures in recent history. The former NFL star used his platform to raise awareness for Black Lives Matter in response to the incalculable number of police killings of Black Americans. Since then, the athlete has severed all times with the NFL and continues to perform the duties of a social activist. However, outside of Kaepernick’s involvement in the issue, his life consists of a number of interesting stories and boundary-breaking moments. As first reported by Deadline, the quarterback will team with Selma director Ava DuVernay for a Netflix series focusing on his adolescence.
Per the initial report, the series will be titled Colin in Black & White. When They See Us scribe Michael Starrbury will pen the series. It will reportedly focus on Kaepernick’s teenage years and early sports successes in his hometown of Turlock, California. Moreover, the series will place a specific perspective on his unique outlook as a young biracial man adopted by a white family and the outlook it creates. Production will likely begin later this year.

Ava DuVernay will serve as the executive producer alongside Colin Kaepernick. In a statement to Deadline, the acclaimed filmmaker expressed her desire to tell this story in a relatable way.
“With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally,” declared DuVernay. “Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”
DuVernay is one of the busiest and highly sought-after names in Hollywood. Over the last few years, she directed big-screen hits like A Wrinkle In Time. Additionally, the new Netflix series will continue the filmmaker’s relationship with the streamer after When They See Us, The 13th, and a cameo on BlackAF. Up next, the Academy Award-nominated director will develop a New Gods film for the DC Extended Universe alongside Tom King.
