Ron Perlman To Play Mangiafuoco In Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’

Earlier this year, Academy Award-winning director Guillermo Del Toro began developing a new animated film based on the iconic Pinocchio story. The Netflix feature will include a litany of A-list actors with Star Wars star Ewan McGregor confirmed to voice Jiminy Cricket. During a recent conversation with ComicBookMovie.com, Hellboy actor Ron Perlman revealed that his role in the upcoming film will be the villainous puppeteer Mangiafuoco.
Additionally, the actor describes the animated filmmaking process and reveals he is more than halfway done with the voice-work.
“I have done my preliminary performance,” Perlman confirmed. “And when I say preliminary, the way animated films work is that the actors give a performance, and that is shipped off to the animators, they animate to the actor’s performances, but things get altered in that process. Then, it comes back to the actors to do their scenes that have been put in or improvements over what you did. I’m about a third of the way through my contribution [to] the film.”

In the 1940 animated Disney film Pinocchio, Mangiafuoco is renamed Stromboli and voiced by Charles Judels. Despite his limited screen time, Stromboli is one of Disney’s most infamous and acclaimed villains. The character often receives praise from critics for possessing the ability to instill in audiences both laughter and fear. In addition to the aforementioned McGregor and Tilda Swinton and Christoph Waltz will also star in the upcoming Netflix film.
Recently, Ron Perlman starred in The Great War and John Swab’s Run with the Hunted. Up next, Perlman will star alongside T.I. in the video game adaptation Monster Hunter. Additionally, he voices a number of characters on the TBS animated series Final Space.
