Netflix’s latest original film Extraction is currently on track to become the streaming service’s highest-grossing endeavor. As first reported by Deadline, a sequel to the action-packed film is in development. Additionally, Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo will return to pen the screenplay.
“The deal is closed to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo revealed in a statement. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience. There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past. He has a shot at redemption which might be fatal. What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”
Starring Thor: Ragnarok‘s Chris Hemsworth, Extraction tells the story a black-market mercenary, Tyler Rake, with nothing to lose. After taking a job to retrieve the son of India’s biggest drug lord, Rake unravels a conspiracy that leaves them both in danger.
Fans of the film will not that things did not end very well for Hemsworth’s Rake. However, despite the fate of the film’s hero, Russo is optimistic that he could return for a sequel. Additionally, Russo said he expects Extraction director Sam Hargrave to return as well. However, no deals have been made at this time.
Moreover, while the monetary success of the film is overwhelming, the film received mixed reviews from critics. Full Circle’s own Katie Gilstrap gave the film a 3/10 rating while writing “Extraction is overcome by gratuitous violence and action sequences, with nothing else involved.”
