Nicolas Cage To Play Joe Exotic In ‘Tiger King’ Scripted Series

For the first time in his storied on-screen career, Nicholas Cage will star in a TV series. Moreover, the legendary actor will make the move to the small screen in a rather unique way. As first reported by Variety, Cage will star in an upcoming script series based on the Netflix docuseries Tiger King as the show’s eccentric centerpiece Joe Schreibvogel, a.k.a Joe Exotic.
Joe Exotic is an American former zoo operator and convicted felon. Throughout his long and, albeit, strange career, the entrepreneur grew to become a prolific breeder of tigers in the United States. Ultimately, Exotic was convicted of 17 federal charges of animal abuse and two counts of murder for hire, for a plot to kill Big Cat Rescue CEO Carole Baskin. This new series will reportedly be separate from the previously announced limited series starring SNL‘s Kate McKinnon. Additionally, the series will take inspiration from the Texas Monthly article Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild by Leif Reigstad.

The eight-episode series will be produced in a joint venture by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios. Dan Lagana will reportedly write the Tiger King-inspired series and serve as its executive producer. Lagana previously worked Netflix’s American Vandal series. Additionally, Brian Grazer, Paul Young, Samie Kim Falvey will produce the series as well.
Over the course of his 40-year career, Cage has appeared in classic films like The Rock, Face/Off, Con Air. The actor ranked number 40 in Empire magazine’s The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time list. His recent credits include voice roles in films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the upcoming Croods 2.
