Early last year, reports that Warner Bros’ had a Sesame Street film in development surfaced. While details remain scarce, early reports confirmed Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway’s involvement. Additionally, as first reported by Collider, the influential hip hop artist Chance the Rapper is in talks to join the cast as well.
Chance will likely star as an aide to the Mayor of the town in which Sesame Street exists. Along with Hathaway, stand-up comedian Bo Burnham is rumored to appear as well. Per the initial report, the film will feature a large ensemble cast of famous cameos similar to the recent Muppets films from Disney.
The film will be directed by Jonathan Krisel, known for his work on the hit series Portlandia. Krisel also penned the film’s script. Furthermore, Free Guy‘s Shawn Levy and Constantine‘s Michael Aguilar will serve as executive producers.
Chance the Rapper is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and activist. His mixtapes and albums have earned him a bevy of critical and commercial acclaim. Additionally, the rapper lays claim to three Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album in 2017. His big-screen career features voice roles in 2019’s The Lion King and the upcoming Trolls World Tour. He has also hosted a few episodes of Saturday Night Live on NBC.
Sesame Street is a universally beloved children’s show that first premiered in 1969. As of 2019, Sesame Street has won 189 Emmy Awards and 11 Grammy Awards, more than any other children’s show. Characters introduced on the series like Big Bird, Elmo, and Oscar the Grouch have become pop culture icons. Anne Hathaway will reportedly play a character named Sally Hawthorne in the upcoming live-action film.
