Rachel McAdams Will Not Return For ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Marvel seems to be taking the sequel to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange through its paces recently. Not only did Scott Derrickson exit the project, but the film has also tapped writer Michael Waldron to rework the script. However, that is not the only shake-up as it was recently revealed Rachel McAdams will not reprise her role in the sequel.
This week, Variety revealed that Sam Raimi is in talks to helm Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In their report, the outlet also noted McAdams will not return as Christine Palmer for the new movie. The actress portrayed Strange’s love interest and was a rather important part of 2016’s Doctor Strange.

While the news is a bit disheartening for fans of the first film, it does make sense given the recent reports concerning the movie. According to one source, the mystical heroine Clea is set to make her MCU debut in the upcoming sequel. In the comics, she and Strange are often depicted in a romantic relationship, so it’s possible the new film will follow suit. Rather than worry about a love triangle, it seems Marvel may be avoiding the problem altogether by ditching Christine Palmer for Clea.
In addition to Clea Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will reportedly introduce Brother Voodoo and alternate versions of familiar MCU characters. With the sequel delving more into the mystical realm of the Marvel universe, it leaves little room for McAdams’ more grounded character.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
