Lin-Manuel Miranda Reveals ‘Hamilton’ Movie Will Feature Original Broadway Cast

UPDATE: Walt Disney Studios confirmed via Twitter that the Hamilton movie featuring the original Broadway cast will be released on October 15, 2021. Following a theatrical run, the film will be available to stream exclusively on Disney+.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is one of the busiest men in show business. He is currently working on new music for Disney’s upcoming live-action Little Mermaid film. Additionally, he will make his directorial debut in with Netflix’s ‘tick, tick…BOOM!’, starring Vanessa Hudgens and Andrew Garfield.

However, the mind behind the Moana soundtrack is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking Broadway show Hamilton: An American Musical. During a recent conversation with Variety, Miranda revealed that the 7th highest-grossing Broadway musical since 1982 is on its way to the big screen. Additionally, he revealed the movie will be made up of previously-filmed footage of the original Broadway cast’s run on stage. Hamilton‘s original director Thomas Kail (Fosse/Verdon) has reportedly taken this stage footage and turned it into a cinematic experience made for wide release. Check out the clip below:

With no confirmed release date, Miranda says the film will come out “hopefully, sooner than later.” Christopher Jackson, who played George Washington in the show’s original cast, shared his excitement regarding the big news on Twitter.

The Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical obtained crossover success due to its soundtrack’s phenomenal success. The original cast’s album is certified 6 times platinum by the RIAA and has become the best-selling cast album of all time. The musical tells the story of the American-immigrant Founding Father Alexander Hamilton through music that draws heavily from hip hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes. Additionally, the show also incorporates color-conscious casting of non-white actors as the historic American figures.

The original Broadway cast for Hamilton includes Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Jonathan Groff as King George III, and Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson. Moreover, the original cast included Christopher Jackson, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Okieriete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

A film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway musical, In The Heights, will be released on June 26, 2020. The film stars Anthony Ramos, Dascha Polano, Stephanie Beatriz, and Corey Hawkins.

  1. YES! EXCELLENT‼️‼️‼️ PLEASE 🙏🏻👍

    1. Yes, but PLEASE do a better job than they did with Les Mis.
It’s a movie, please use the movie special effects.

Also, we do3nt need to see anyone’s uvula to prove they are singing. And if there’s a great scene but the music is off key… Well, post-production exists for a reason!!

      Thank you!

      1. I agree with your comment but…it’s not going to be a live action like Les Mis was. It’s a professional recording of the stage play with the original cast.

        So much excite!

  5. YES!!! A million times yes!!! My 14 year old granddaughter is in love with the musical and knows all the words to all the songs. They should teach history through musicals like this. Then kids would WANT to learn!

Looking forward to seeing and hearing more from Lin-Manuel Miranda! What a gifted artist. And not bad looking, either…

  7. I have not seen the Musical, but Leslie Odom, Jr.’s performance with the NC Symphony in 2019 was phenomenal!
Can’t wait to see him on screen as Burr in “Hamilton”.

    1. Oh absolutely!!!!

Without a doubt, seeing the movie would be pure joy!

  9. It’s settle for a film version of the original staged play (if one exísts)

    1. You need to watch the video clip in the article. That is exactly what Miranda says it will be.

  10. Though I think it would be great no matter what I think they should use different actors. Watching it on film is gonna be a different experience and so I’d want see a different set of actors’ interpretations.

  11. Please release it soon. I’m not getting any younger.

  12. I love that the creator / actor still has control over the Hamilton property. He must have an insanely great lawyer to keep this out of the hands of the “usual suspects” on Broadway and in Hollywood, who would have his superb ideas play second fiddle to the giant egos with zero talent, either creative or marketing.

  13. I think I’ve listened to the original cast recording 200 times. I think I will watch the movie at least as many.

  14. It was filmed long before the original cast started breaking up. This should not be a surprise to anyone…apart from the release date.

  15. Yes!!!! Would love to be able to see the original cast perform.

  16. Jonathan Geoff is awesome — but, man — the actor who played King George in Chicago would be a phenomenal pick as well!!

  17. Heck Yeah.. so excited..

  18. 😳 OMG! 😳
I am ready to buy tickets NOW!!! I can’t wait!

  19. […] celebrate the headlines quite yet, Hamil-fans. Despite reports that “Lin-Manuel Miranda Reveals ‘Hamilton’ Movie Will Feature Original Broadway Cast,” a film of the hit musical won’t be hitting theaters any time soon, and certainly not a […]

  20. Please. Yo.

(Being “Hamilton” for Oh, HELL yes!)

    1. I was writing a comment and it disappeared? I would love to see the movie with the original cast – pure and simple !!!

  21. I MUCH prefer the filming of the stage performance over making it into a movie with outdoor sets.

  22. Saw it in San Diego, went to San Francisco just to see it again. But to see it with original cast and have the opportunity to see it multiple times, dream come true!!

  23. Unable to get tix for Phoenix tour last year (too $$), so ABSOLUTELY YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. ABSOLUTELY!!! I’VE SEEN IT 4 TIMES AND WOULD SEE IT EVERY DAY IF I COULD!!

  25. Even though I saw the play in Memphis (and it was fabulous), I so want to see with the original cast. I try to catch any bootlegged video I can on YouTube, but it’s not enough and will never be satisfied until I see the first Broadway cast.
