‘The Batman’: Matt Reeves Enlists Paul Dano As The Riddler

Just a day after Jonah Hill fell out of talks to join Matt Reeves’ upcoming reboot of the Dark Knight, his place in the cast has been filled. Prisoners star Paul Dano has signed on to portray Edward Nashton, aka the Riddler, in The Batman.
Starting his career on Broadway, Dano broke into film with the 2000 family drama The Newcomers. In the years since, he’s appeared in numerous projects, including the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave, Prisoners and Rian Johnson’s Looper.
First appearing in Detective Comics #140, the Riddler is one of Batman’s oldest and most notable villains. He prides himself on his superior intellect and often gloats it by sending the police and Batman riddles to solve, which usually prove simple for the World’s Greatest Detective. The Riddler has only appeared once on the big screen in 1995’s Batman Forever, which saw famous comedian Jim Carrey tackle the role.
Dano will join The Lighthouse star Robert Pattinson, who will play Bruce Wayne/Batman while Jeffrey Wright will portray Commissioner Jim Gordon. Earlier this week, Zoë Kravitz joined the cast of the film as Catwoman.

Recently, Pattinson spoke with Variety in a tell-all interview about the film’s direction. “I really like Matt Reeves and his setup for it. It’s an interesting direction,” the titular star explained. “It’s something from the comics which hasn’t really been explored yet. It’s crazy shoes to fill. It’s interesting the different directions you can take with it and that the, in some ways, quite a specific character actually has a lot of leeway. When you look at the different tones of the movies and TV shows, you can do quite a lot with it.”
