Jon M. Chu has gained a pretty impressive reputation for developing and directing movies based on beloved musicals. Up next, it appears the director is continuing down this trail with a rather ambitious offering. As first reported by Deadline, Chu is on board to direct the upcoming film adaptation of the Tony Award-nominated musical Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. The sung-through musical is the first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly. In 1999, a direct-to-video film adaptation starring Donny Osmond was released.

Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group will produce the feature with Amazon Studios acquiring distribution rights. Chu’s In The Heights producing partner Scott Sanders will serve as the film’s executive producer alongside Benjamin Lowry (Boyhood) and the aforementioned Tim Rice.
Jon M. Chu is currently directing the highly anticipated two-part adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. The filmmaker also recently served as a producer for the Disney+ Willow series. Up next, Chu will reportedly direct an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! for Warner Bros.
