Benedict Cumberbatch, David Oyelowo, James McAvoy, & More Join Jeymes Samuel’s ‘The Book of Clarence’

Last fall, filmmaker Jeymes Samuel wowed audiences all over the world with his directorial debut for Netflix The Harder They Fall. Up next, the director hopes to up the ante even more. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the director is assembling a star-studded cast for the feature titled The Book of Clarence.
Per the initial report, Samuel has enlisted RJ Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste for the feature. They join LaKeith Stanfield and Omar Sy, who were the first names announced for the feature. Additionally, Caleb McLaughlin, Teyana Taylor, Babs Olusanmokun, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Nicholas Pinnock, Micheal Ward, Chase Dillon, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor will all appear in the jam-packed film as well.

Samuel will direct the feature from an original screenplay he wrote alongside James Lassiter. Moreover, Samuel will executive produce the project hip hop legend Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. Legendary Pictures will finance and distribute the film via the company’s new production deal with Sony.
The Book of Clarence is reportedly inspired by classic Hollywood films and will be set in Biblical times. The film will take place in Jerusalem and follow the titular Clarence (Stanfield) as he embarks on a journey to capitalize on the recent celebrity of Jesus Christ for his own gain. His quest takes him through a variety of perilous obstacles and explores the concept of faith and love.
