‘Spy x Family’ Gets Tense With “Disarm The Time Bomb”

Spy x Family‘s second cour is wasting no time as it has amped up the tension with its newest episode, Disarm the Time Bomb. Last episode, Yor saved Anya from the terrorists and bomb dogs, and today’s episode picks up right there. After scaring off the remaining bad guys, Yor reports what happened to the police leaving Anya to talk to the dog that helped save her. And this is where things start to get a little more intense.
After reading the dog’s mind, Anya sees he has had a new vision of the future, one where Loid is gone. Anya is shocked that in the vision, Loid is killed in an explosion set off by the terrorists. Thus far, most of the issues in the series have seemed much more light-hearted, from Anya failing her tests to fights with classmates, so this is a much more serious turn for the series. And thankfully, Spy x Family is able to balance it well, maintaining the stakes of the situation while keeping its fun and wholesome tone.

Nevertheless, Anya will not let anything happen to her papa, so she and her new friend set out to save him and prevent war. The two race off to where the explosion is set to go off, with Yor chasing after them. Meanwhile, the focus switches back to Loid and WISE, who are still working on taking down the terrorists. Thanks to the information they attained in the last episode, they were able to take out the entire group save for the leader. The exchange between WISE’s leader, Sylvia, and the would-be terrorists offers some insight into her past and Loid’s as they lay out what a real war looks like to the ignorant college students. And again, this is a much darker tone than previously seen in the series, making for some intense reflection.
Back to Anya, she and her new friend have successfully found the bomb that will potentially kill Loid. After sneaking into the room with the explosive, Anya prepares to disarm it with all her knowledge from her favorite Spy shows. Unfortunately, none of it helps, and Anya realizes that she can not actually disarm a bomb. Thankfully, that doesn’t stop her from warning her papa and the other agents of WISE as she writes out a warning with ketchup. Not wanting Loid to question why she is there, she leaves and waits to see if her sign worked. And thanks to her efforts, Loid was able to spot the bomb resulting in the dog’s vision changing back, revealing Anya, Yor, and Loid all together again.

Now with that resolved, it’s all up to Loid to stop the assassination of the foreign minister and prevent a potential war. Switching places with the minister Loid dons a disguise and ditches the secret police, with Yor’s brother Yuri included. As Loid drives off in disguise, the leader of the terrorist group gives chase leading to an exciting car chase between the groups showcasing some of the smooth animation Spy x Family has become known for. After ditching the car, Loid runs off with the remaining bomb dog in pursuit. And unfortunately for viewers, the episode ends on quite the cliffhanger with the dog leaping at Loid, who has his weapon drawn and ready to strike.
As expected, this week’s Spy x Family is yet another exciting and fun entry in the series. Balancing the wholesome adventures, fans have come to expect from the Forgers while balancing a tense and serious situation; this episode showed that the show is willing to branch out without losing itself. With that said, hopefully, next week’s episode gets her fast so viewers can see the exciting conclusion of Project: Apple and find out what’s in store for the Forger and their new friend.– Jacob Campbell
