‘Creed’ Spinoff ‘Drago’ In The Works At MGM Studios

One of the most successful film franchises in recent memory is the Michael B. Jordan-starring Creed series. Now, the Rocky spinoff films are getting their own spinoff treatment. As first reported by The Wrap, a spinoff film titled Drago is officially in the works.
Per the initial report, MGM will finance the film. Screenwriter Robert Lawton is currently penning the script for the studio. Lawton recently wrote a script titled Becoming Rocky, which is about the making of the first Rocky film and impressed MGM executives so much they’re offering him his own film set in the same world.

Precise details surrounding the feature are not currently known. However, with a title like Drago, its obvious that the film will likely focus on Russian fighter Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who first appeared in 1985’s Rocky IV. Lundgren reprised the role in 2018’s Creed 2 alongside Florian Munteanu, who portrays Ivan’s son Viktor Drago. Notably, Lundgren teased a possible Drago spinoff during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter last winter.
Creed, originally directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) and its subsequent sequel Creed II has grossed a combined $387 million at the worldwide box office. Additionally, they serve as the latest additions to the wildly popular Rocky film series. The film stars Michael B. Jordan as the son of legendary boxer Apollo Creed as he looks to continue his father’s legacy alongside his trainer Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone, who starred in the original Rocky films. Jordan will next direct the third installment in the Creed franchise as well as star in the film opposite Jonathan Majors.
