‘Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe’ Movie Review: “Another Wild Ride”

In 1993, MTV gave Mike Judge’s creation a slot on TV, and Beavis and Butt-Head immediately became iconic. The show had seven original seasons and a reboot in 2011. A film in 1996 – Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, and much more. The two slapstick characters are always hunting for one thing: to score. In 2022 Judge and MTV have brought back the two iconic characters for another wild ride on Paramount+, this time through Time and Space.
Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe starts off in 1998. Our two ‘heroes’ start off at a science fair for school. They cause a fire to burn down pretty much the entire school after a gonads kicking experiment goes wrong. The prize for winning was a trip to Space Camp at the Lyndon B. John Space Center in Houston. The boys attend court and after a quick trial a ‘creative’ judge sentences the boys to Space Camp instead of Juvenile. Using their upbringing as his reasoning.
The boys meet Serena Ryan (Andrea Savage), and think she’s telling them she wants to let them score with her. She quickly becomes annoyed with them and sends them into space. They travel 24 years into the future through a black hole and wind up in 2022. Serena in the Governor of Texas, iPhones are a thing, and Galveston looks vastly different. Beavis and Butt-Head are met by their alternates Smart Beavis and Smart Butt-Head. They go on a galactic adventure and continue to try to score with Serena Ryan.

Beavis and Butt-Head do the Universe is a fun story. Mike Judge, Guy Maxtone-Graham, and Lewis Morton keep it ridiculous as always. After years of not having these characters and their insane adventures grace our screens; Judge and company came up with a great way to reel us back in. Morton’s screenplay is so much, and it’s a grand ole time. Beavis and Butt-Head getting a sci-fi film is something I never thought I would see. It works out perfectly and the crew makes it fit well.
The animation in this film is never dull. The way we see the technological advancements in animation throughout this film is awesome. In the 1998 portion, we get the original Beavis and Butt-Head animation. In the 2022 portion there is a newer updated more clear animation. It was a really cool way to show how animation has advanced in 24 years, while giving us a good movie to watch in the process.
Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is a fun ride. The voice acting is good, and very enjoyable as the voices are just as classic as ever. Savage, Judge, Chi McBride, Gary Cole, and Bryan Huskey stand out by far, This was a great way to bring something most of us grew up with. Beavis and Butt-Head was a staple on MTV and something that’s remained in pop culture for decades. Overall it’s a good time and if you’re familiar with these characters you’ll enjoy it! – Rascal F.
