Alexandra Shipp Joins Margot Robbie In Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’

Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig has a lot of eyes on her next project following the success of her last films, Lady Bird and Little Women. Her latest venture is a live-action Barbie feature starring Margot Robbie. As first reported by Variety, tick, tick… BOOM! star Alexandra Shipp is the latest name to join the ever-growing ensemble.

Shipp joins fellow recent additions to the Simu Liu, Ariana Greenblatt, America Ferrera, and Kate McKinnon. Additionally, Ryan Gosling is on-board to portray Barbie’s longtime love interest Ken in the film as well. Details surrounding Shipp’s character are scarce at this time.

The feature film will be written by Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach. While the story will be based on the popular Mattel toy, plot details are relatively unknown. First launching in 1959, the Barbie franchise is widely popular and, in 2020, was valued at approximately $440 million.

Alexandra Shipp recently wowed audiences alongside Andrew Garfield in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut tick, tick… BOOM!. Previously, Shipp played the iconic Marvel superhero Storm in multiple movies within the X-Men film franchise. Up next, Shipp will star alongside Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger in David Sandberg’s Kung Fury 2. She will also join Adam Driver in the upcoming sci-fi flick 65.
