Marvel Studios has reportedly found its star for its upcoming Disney+ Halloween special. According to The Wrap, Gael García Bernal has been tapped to play Werewolf by Night.
Two different characters have used the name Werewolf by Night in the comics, including Jack Russell and Jake Gomez. Russell was created by Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, and Mike Ploog. He first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #2 in 1972. The character descends from a line of werewolves that were created by Dracula himself, who cursed the family. Meanwhile, Gomez debuted in 2020’sWerewolf by Night #1 by Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff, and Scot Eaton. Gomez is a member of the Hopi Native American tribe whose family was cursed with lycanthropy. It is currently unclear which version will serve as inspiration for the special.
Bernal most recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. He is also known for his previous roles in Netflix’s Wasp Network and Mozart in the Jungle, for which he won a Golden Globe.
The Werewolf by Night Halloween special is reportedly set to bring production in early 2022. No further casting has been announced for the project, so stay tuned for further updates.
