Universal’s ‘Wolfman’ Finds Its Director In Derek Cianfrance

The Wolfman reboot starring Ryan Gosling has seemingly gained more traction. According to Deadline, Derek Cianfrance will direct the film. Cianfrance is also penning the script for the film. Leigh Whannel, who recently directed The Invisible Man, exited the film. Cianfrance has worked with Gosling before on films Blue Valentine and Beyond the Pines. Blumhouse, Gosling, and Ken Kao will be producing the film
Universal originally wanted to create a “Monster” universe using the IP of all the classic monsters. They have however opened the door for solo films that don’t necessarily have to be connected. This film will not be a period piece like Anthony Hopkins’ and Benicio Del Toro’s Wolfman. Much like The Invisible Man and Tom Cruise’s Mummy, it will be set in modern times. Though, we do not know what exactly this film’s plot will be yet.

Cianfrance is not an event film director. His work is more so adult drama. He directed his last film in 2016 titled The Light Between Oceans. He also directed all six episodes of I Know This Much Is True on HBO, which won an Emmy. Cianfrance says he loves horror, and it’s something he’s always wanted to do. This should get any fan of the monster franchise excited.
Universal’s most recent attempt at a “Monster” universe was an utter disaster. Dracula: Untold and Cruise’s The Mummy were Box Office failures that led to the studio’s decision to try something new. The Wolfman‘s earliest film was in 1941 and the character’s second appearance was in 1943. He’s also appeared in 2004’s Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman. The last appearance was the aforementioned 2010 film starring Hopkins and Del Toro. While no release date has been set yet, this latest installment is sure to be interesting.
