Rachel Brosnahan & Millicent Simmonds To Star In Hellen Keller Biopic ‘Hellen & Teacher’

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan will be joined by A Quiet Place breakout star Millicent Simmonds in the upcoming Hellen Keller biographical film Hellen & Teacher.
According to Variety, Simmonds and Brosnahan will be playing the titular Hellen Keller and teacher Anne Sullivan. Simmonds’ casting in this role marks a bigger step forward in the honest representation of deaf characters on screen. Historically, adaptations of Hellen Keller’s story and many other deaf characters in the film see non-deaf actors in starring roles.

The biopic will focus on Keller’s young adult life as her perspective grew during her time at Radcliffe College at Harvard University in the early 1900s. Tensions rise between her and the conservative teacher Sullivan as Hellen grows mature and experiences her sexual awakening during her academic ventures. Sullivan will also be in the midst of courtship by the young publisher, John Macy. The film will explore both women’s evolutions in the everchanging societal and political landscape of the early 20th century, placing pressure on their strained relationship.
Helen & Teacher is a Killer Films and Sugar23 production and with Cornerstone handling international sales. Additionally, their sales will commence at the American Film Market this November. Principal photography will reportedly begin in summer 2022.
