Taika Waititi’s Animated ‘Flash Gordon’ Film Will Now Be Live-Action

In 2019 Taika Watiti signed on to helm an animated take on Flash Gordon. But now it has been announced that the film is being developed as a live-action project.
Created by Alex Raymond in 1934, Flash Gordon was the protagonist of a space adventure comic strip. The character was created to compete with Buck Rogers but eventually became its own iconic property. The strip followed Gordon, a handsome polo player and Yale graduate, who, along with his friends Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov, faced off with the evil ruler Ming the Merciless on the planet Mongo. In 1980 a feature film based on the character was released and went on to become a cult classic.

During a recent interview, producer John Davis informed Collider that the project has shifted from animation to live-action.
“Taika is writing it. It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up. It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, ‘Let’s do it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live-action.’ I said, ‘Even better.'”
According to Davis, the project has yet to enter the writing phase and is still in early development. Given they have settled on a medium for the film hopefully, the film can begin to progress further in the near future.
