Sony Pictures is looking to expand its video game adaptation output in a very big way. According to Deadline, Playstation Studios has enlisted John Wick‘s Chad Stahelski to helm a live-action film based on Ghost of Tsushima.
The story will follow samurai warrior Jin Sakai, the last surviving member of his clan, who must set aside the strict traditions of a warrior to wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima. After helming the first three John Wick films, Stahelski will bring Tsushima to life alongside Alex Young and Jason Spitz who are producing through their action-orientated company 87Eleven Entertainment. Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, assured fans that the major talent is passionate about the game and serves as the perfect fit for the project:
“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen. We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.”
Stahelski is currently prepping production on the fourth Wick film and is loosely attached to a Highlander reboot, but it seems Ghost of Tsushima will be a major priority going forward. His action-packed work fits exceptionally well with Sucker Punch Productions’ magnum opus, which is consistently hailed for its revolutionary gameplay fighting mechanics and vibrant visuals.
The film announcement comes soon after a bevy of awards and blockbuster sales, selling 6.5 million copies since releasing in July 2020. Ghost of Tsushima is the second film project to come from PlayStation Productions, after Tom Holland’s Uncharted arrives to theaters on February 11, 2022. In the TV realm, The Last of Us is being adapted for HBO with Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin writing and executive producing.
