Marvel Studios Taps ‘Watchmen’ Scribe Stacy Osei-Kuffour To Write Mahershala Ali’s ‘Blade, The Vampire Slayer’

Since its initial announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, Marvel’s Blade reboot has been a bit of a mystery for movie fans. However, with Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali in the titular role, Marvel Studios is beginning to flesh out the film’s development. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, New York playwright Stacy Osei-Kuffour is boarding the film, officially titled Blade, the Vampire Slayer, to write the script.
Stacy Osei-Kuffour continues what is an upward trajectory in her screenwriting career. With credits in hit shows like Hulu’s PEN15 and Amazon’s Hunters, Osei-Kuffour recently served as story editor and writer on the Emmy Award-winning limited series, Watchmen. Additionally, the hiring of the versatile creative mind marks the first time a Black female will pen a Marvel movie.

Created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, Blade’s first appearance was in The Tomb of Dracula #10 in July 1973. A human-vampire hybrid, Blade, real name Eric Brooks, has devoted his life to ridding the world of all vampires. Utilizing his unique physiology to become the perfect vampire hunter as the Daywalker. Moreover, the antihero was portrayed by Wesley Snipes in a trilogy of live-action films from New Line Cinema. Additionally, the character has appeared alongside The Avengers in Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., voiced by J.D. Hall and Terry Crews, respectively.
The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be split between big-screen films like Blade as well as Disney+ shows like WandaVision. In addition to Blade, Marvel Studios will introduce new characters like Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, Moon Knight, and Ironheart into the MCU over the next few years.
Currently, Mahershala Ali appears in the Golden Globe-winning Hulu series Ramy. Up next, he will portray the legendary boxer Jack Johnson in a new biographical series titled Unruly. Moreover, Ali will lend his voice to the animated superhero series Invincible alongside J.K. Simmons and Mark Hamill and star in Swan Song along with Naomie Harris and Awkwafina.
