Selena Gomez To Star In & Produce Silvia Vásquez-Lavado Biopic ‘In The Shadow Of The Mountain’

Following worldwide domination in the realm of pop music, it appears former Billboard Woman of the Year Selena Gomez is making her way back to her acting roots. With a role in Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building on the horizon, Gomez is adding an upcoming biopic to her slate of projects. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Gomez will star in In the Shadow of the Mountain from One Community.
The film will document the life and times of Peruvian mountaineer and social entrepreneur Silvia Vásquez-Lavado. Vásquez-Lavado is the first Peruvian woman to climb Mount Everest. Additionally, she is the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits. The film will pull inspiration from Vásquez-Lavado’s upcoming memoir of the same name. The life of this incredible woman, who suffered abuse and neglect as a child, lends itself to tell a story of inspiration that could potentially become an awards season contender upon its release.

Elgin James (Little Birds) will write and direct the film. Moreover, Gomez will serve as one of the picture’s executive producers alongside Oscar winner Donna Gigliotti (Hidden Figures). “Silvia is a force of nature,” said Gigliotti in a statement. “Scott Budnick (Just Mercy) and I are so excited to work with Elgin and Selena to tell this story of resilience, courage, adventure, and humanity.”
Since rising to fame on Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez began focusing on music full time. The successful singer has sold over 7 million albums and 22 million singles worldwide. Additionally, the “Same Old Love” singer’s on-screen roles include voice roles in all three Hotel Transylvania films as well as Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle. Up next, Gomez will host her own cooking show on HBO Max titled Selena + Chef.
